Map the handoff dates
The dangerous gaps appear between systems, not inside one checklist.
- Six weeks beforeConfirm housing end, final pay, student health coverage, campus access and the destination for mail and records.
- Four weeks beforeBuild a bridge budget, export permitted files and verify personal contact information on essential accounts.
- Two weeks beforeConfirm transportation, medication continuity, benefits start dates and what the first work or search week requires.
- Graduation weekProtect documents, keys, devices and one functional bag from ceremony and move-out confusion.
- First month afterReview actual cash flow, complete required loan steps and correct any coverage or account-access gap promptly.
Build the bridge for the path you actually have
Do not copy a full-time employee checklist when the next step is different.
- Job starts immediatelyFocus on the first paycheck gap, commute, benefit eligibility date and temporary housing or relocation costs.
- Job search continuesSet a sustainable weekly search rhythm, protect health coverage and define how long current housing and savings last.
- Further studyMap enrollment, aid, housing and coverage dates without assuming student status continues seamlessly.
- Service, caregiving or recoveryPlan income, coverage, location and responsibilities explicitly rather than describing the period as doing nothing.
Protect health and loan transitions from assumptions
Student health coverage may end on a school-specific date. Losing student coverage can qualify for a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period, while dependent coverage, employer coverage and state programs have different rules. Verify the actual end date and application window with current primary sources.
Federal student loan borrowers who graduate, leave school or drop below half-time may need exit counseling and should review current loan and servicer information. Do not build the bridge budget from an estimated payment copied from another borrower.
Keep the first week functional
A bridge setup should make essential actions possible even when the long-term plan is unfinished.
- Identity and recordsKeep government ID, work authorization where applicable, insurance information, transcript access and tax records secure.
- CommunicationUse a personal email and phone number on job, loan, health and housing accounts before school access changes.
- MoneyKnow the next income date, essential bills, available buffer and the action required if the gap is larger than expected.
- HealthConfirm coverage, medications, providers and urgent-care options in the place you will actually live.
- Work baseSet up one reliable place for applications, onboarding, calls and document storage without waiting for a perfect apartment.
