Track five separate milestones

Submitting the form is one checkpoint, not the whole renewal.

  1. PrepareConfirm the award year, StudentAid.gov access and contributor contact information.
  2. SubmitComplete the FAFSA before the earliest school or state priority deadline that applies.
  3. ProcessReview the FAFSA Submission Summary, answers, signatures and listed schools.
  4. RespondComplete school verification, state forms and document requests through official channels.
  5. AcceptReview the school’s final offer and complete only the loan or aid requirements you choose.
  6. ReconcileConfirm accepted aid, enrollment and the student account agree before the bill deadline.

Confirm the small dependencies

A missing signature or separate state form can matter as much as the main submission.

  • Correct yearMatch the FAFSA year to the academic period you will attend.
  • Contributor actionVerify every required contributor received, completed and signed their section.
  • School listConfirm the institutions that should receive the record.
  • Priority formsCheck institutional renewal, state grant and scholarship requirements beyond FAFSA.

Ask the aid office before assuming renewal

Institutional and state aid can have their own rules.

  • What is the earliest deadline?Use the school’s date even when the federal window remains open.
  • What must be renewed separately?Ask about named scholarships, grants, appeals and academic plans.
  • Is my file complete?Request the specific outstanding item and submission channel.
  • When will the offer update?Understand review timing before making housing or registration decisions.

Save proof without saving passwords

Keep the submission date, confirmation, summary and school correspondence in one aid-year folder. Contributors should keep their own StudentAid.gov credentials private; do not create or control another person’s account.
