Preserve the transaction as it happens
A clean timeline makes the requested remedy easier to evaluate.
- Before purchaseSave price, item, delivery promise, return window, renewal price and cancellation method.
- At purchaseKeep receipt, order number, payment method and any trial end date.
- At problemPhotograph condition, track delivery and contact the merchant through an official channel.
- At cancellationFollow the stated method, save confirmation and monitor later statements.
- After resolutionVerify the promised credit, replacement or cancellation appears on the account.
Ask for the exact remedy
Refund, replacement, cancellation and charge dispute are different requests.
- What policy applies?Identify the version, dates, exclusions and whether fees or shipping are refundable.
- What outcome do I want?State refund, replacement, repair, cancellation or correction.
- What evidence is required?Provide the order, defect, cancellation or communication record without oversharing identity data.
- When should it post?Ask for the refund method, amount and expected processing time.
- What separate card deadline applies?Do not let a slow merchant conversation consume the issuer’s dispute window.
Escalate in a clean sequence
Preserve each response and deadline.
- MerchantUse the documented process and request a reference number.
- Payment providerIf appropriate, use the official credit or debit dispute process promptly.
- Regulator or attorney generalReport deceptive subscriptions, unauthorized charges or unresolved consumer problems to the relevant authority.
- Account protectionChange credentials or payment access when the transaction suggests compromise rather than a normal dispute.
Treat renewal notices as information, not links
The FTC warns that fake renewal notices can seek payment information. Open the service through a known app, saved bookmark or independently verified contact rather than clicking the message.
