Begin with a question that has edges
Ask about one transition, task, team or decision you are genuinely trying to understand. People can answer what changed between internship and full-time work more usefully than tell me everything about your career.
A conversation is not a hidden referral request. Let information be a complete outcome, and do not treat access to a person as permission to use their name in an application.
Create one useful professional conversation
Keep the request small enough that the other person can choose freely.
- Choose the questionUse current role research to identify something a public profile or job posting cannot answer.
- Explain the connectionState who you are, why this person's experience is relevant and the limited time you are requesting.
- Listen for specificsAsk follow-ups about tasks, tradeoffs and transitions instead of pivoting immediately to your résumé.
- Close the loopThank them, record what changed in your thinking and complete any action you promised.
Protect the relationship from vague pressure
Clarity helps both people understand what is and is not being requested.
- Am I asking for information, feedback or access?Choose one purpose rather than hiding a referral request inside a general chat.
- Could this be answered publicly?Do basic research before asking someone to repeat their employer's website.
- Is the timing respectful?Offer a short asynchronous option and accept no response without repeated reminders.
- Did they offer the next step?Do not assume a conversation authorizes a referral, introduction or continued contact.
- What did I learn?Update the role, skill or application decision so the conversation changes more than your contact count.
Keep a context-rich contact record
Store only what supports respectful follow-through.
- OriginRecord the event, introduction, class or shared context where you connected.
- SubstanceNote the question discussed and the insight that affected your decision.
- PermissionRecord any offered introduction, material or follow-up without expanding it.
- Next actionComplete the promised task or let the interaction end cleanly.
