Measure the inventory before comparing prices
List each box, bin and large item with approximate size, weight and replacement value. Remove items that are cheaper or easier to donate than transport before requesting quotes.
Use the same pickup date, delivery date, access constraints and service level for every option. A storage quote without transport and a shipping quote without packing are not competing totals.
Build one door-to-door total
Include the work and risk that each option transfers to you.
- StorageAdd pickup, unit, lock, administration, insurance terms, access, price changes and the future retrieval trip.
- Parcel shippingAdd boxes, packing, measured weight or dimensions, declared value, pickup, tracking and final delivery constraints.
- Driving your carAdd fuel, tolls, lodging, parking, added distance, safe driver hours and whether the inventory actually fits.
- Rental vehicleAdd rate, mileage, fuel, taxes, equipment, insurance terms, drop fees and local transport at both ends.
- Moving companyUse a written estimate, verify who transports the goods and include packing, access, valuation and delivery-window terms.
Test the quote for missing work
Ask what event would make the final price or delivery different.
- Who touches the goods?Distinguish a carrier, mover, broker, storage operator and subcontractor before sharing payment or inventory.
- What is not included?Ask about stairs, elevators, long carries, parking, packing, fuel, weight, oversize items and delayed access.
- What protects loss or damage?Read the actual liability, valuation, claim, deductible and prohibited-item terms instead of using the word insured alone.
- What happens at the other end?Confirm delivery notice, building access, storage retrieval and who can receive the shipment.
