Look in five places

Charges can appear before, during or after registration.

  • Institutional feesStudent activity, technology, health, transportation, recreation and orientation charges.
  • Program feesClinical, laboratory, studio, equipment, licensure or cohort costs.
  • Course feesMaterials, field trips, online platforms, proctoring and special facilities.
  • Transaction feesPayment plan, card payment, late registration, replacement ID and returned payment.
  • Optional chargesInsurance, parking, meal upgrades, printing, tickets and memberships that may use opt-out rules.
  • Housing and dining feesCheck application, early-arrival, break-stay, meal-change and checkout charges separately.

Classify before disputing or paying

The correct next step depends on why the charge exists.

  • Mandatory and fixedConfirm the applicable enrollment status and whether aid or waivers can cover it.
  • Course-triggeredCheck whether changing sections, materials or delivery mode changes the fee before add/drop.
  • WaivableFind eligibility, documentation, deadline and whether the waiver must be renewed.
  • Optional opt-outComplete the official decline process and verify the account credit.
  • Possible errorUse the student accounts dispute process with the course, date and policy evidence.

Check the refund clock

Dropping a course or declining a service does not always reverse the associated charge automatically. Read the fee-specific refund and add/drop rules before acting, then save the revised account statement.

When a fee supports a service you intend to use, include it once in the annual budget rather than paying it and then budgeting for a duplicate private service.

Ask for the trigger and the exit

Student accounts can answer faster when the question names the charge.

  • What created it?Ask whether enrollment, course, program, housing or a transaction generated the fee.
  • Is it recurring?Find out whether it appears each term, year or only once.
  • Can it be waived or reversed?Request the exact policy, deadline and documentation.
  • When will the account update?Ask how long a drop, waiver or correction takes to post.
