Collect the documents before comparing
A marketing page cannot answer a coverage question by itself.
- Summary of Benefits and CoverageUse the standard summary to compare deductibles, copays, coinsurance and major exclusions.
- Provider directorySearch the campus ZIP code for primary care, urgent care, hospitals, mental health and specialists.
- Drug formularyCheck current medications, preferred pharmacies, prior authorization and specialty-drug rules.
- Out-of-area termsConfirm routine, urgent and emergency coverage at school, home and during travel.
- Waiver requirementsRead the school's deadline and minimum coverage criteria before declining or duplicating a plan.
Test five realistic care scenarios
Compare the full path from appointment to bill.
- Student health visitAsk whether clinic access is included, separately charged or billed to insurance.
- Urgent evening illnessLocate an in-network after-hours option and estimate the visit cost.
- Ongoing therapyCheck visit limits, behavioral-health network, referral rules and privacy implications of billing.
- Regular prescriptionPrice the specific medication at a campus-area pharmacy instead of assuming the same home cost.
- Specialist or hospitalCheck referral, authorization, facility and physician network status separately.
Separate access from insurance
A campus clinic may serve enrolled students even when it is not the insurer, and a student plan may use an outside network. Ask who schedules care, who bills it and which services require another provider.
HealthCare.gov notes that students may have school, family or Marketplace options. If a family plan is based in another state, verify the campus-area network before relying on the card.
Resolve the decision before the deadline
Write down answers that affect the full academic year.
- When does coverage start and end?Look for gaps around move-in, graduation, leave or loss of eligibility.
- Who handles claims problems?Save both the insurer contact and the campus office responsible for enrollment.
- What changes on leave?Ask how reduced enrollment or medical leave affects eligibility and premiums.
- How is emergency care handled?Know the emergency terms, but never delay emergency care to search a directory.
