Audit the ordinary month
Use actual behavior rather than the mission statement.
- What time did it consume?Include meetings, preparation, travel, fundraising, messages and emotional cleanup.
- What did it cost?Include dues, clothing, food, transportation, gifts, penalties and lost work hours.
- What did I learn or build?Name the skill, relationship, service or enjoyment that remains outside the next event.
- Can members say no?Notice guilt, secrecy, humiliation, threats, retaliation or punishment for declining.
- Who is accountable?Identify the adviser, campus office, financial controls and conduct process beyond student leadership.
Respond before the next escalation
The response should match both the burden and the safety risk.
- One difficult weekDecline one optional task and ask for the written expectation.
- Repeating overloadReduce the role, set a fixed availability window and document the agreement.
- Coercion or retaliationStep away, preserve messages and contact the adviser or responsible campus office.
- Hazing or immediate dangerLeave the situation and use campus or emergency reporting routes; do not handle it as an internal team conflict.
Leaving can be responsible leadership
A role is not sustainable if the organization depends on members ignoring class, work, sleep, money or safety. Give a clear departure date, transfer legitimate records or property and avoid accepting an indefinite rescue period.
If money, threats, discrimination, hazing or retaliation are involved, keep evidence and use the campus oversight process rather than negotiating only with the same leaders causing the concern.
Make the exit complete
Close real obligations without inventing new ones.
- Written noticeState the role, final date and any specific approved handoff.
- Property and accessReturn keys, equipment and files, then remove financial and account permissions.
- Legitimate balanceRequest an itemized explanation for disclosed dues or expenses before paying.
- Record concernsSave relevant messages and report safety, conduct or financial issues through the responsible office.
- Protect recoveryReplace the time with sleep, coursework, work or relationships rather than another immediate leadership role.
