Start with proof you can discuss
List paid work, family responsibilities, coursework, labs, student organizations, volunteering and personal projects without deciding what sounds impressive. Under each one, write what you made, changed, organized, served or learned to use.
A first résumé can be short. Relevance and clarity are more useful than filler sections, decorative skill bars or claims such as hardworking that the document does not prove.
Choose evidence by the role
The same experience can support different applications when the emphasis is honest.
- Customer-facing roleUse examples of questions answered, problems resolved, volume handled or service improved.
- Technical roleName the tool, method, system or artifact and explain what you personally built or tested.
- Research roleShow the question, evidence process, analysis, documentation and collaboration boundaries.
- Operations roleDescribe scheduling, inventory, coordination, accuracy or a repeated process you improved.
- Early explorationUse a strong course or personal project when it gives better evidence than an unrelated title.
Write a bullet that survives an interview
Every line should lead to a story you can tell without exaggerating.
- Name the actionBegin with the specific work you performed rather than a personality trait.
- Add the objectState what you analyzed, built, scheduled, served, documented or communicated.
- Show the settingInclude the team, audience, constraint or tool when it changes the meaning.
- Use a result you can verifyAdd scale, completion, accuracy, time saved or feedback only when you know the basis.
- Prepare the explanationKeep the longer story in interview notes so the résumé remains concise.
Run the plain-document test
Readable structure matters more than a distinctive template.
- Contact pathUse a professional email you will keep and remove a full street address unless it is required.
- Consistent hierarchyMake organization, role, dates and location easy to distinguish at a glance.
- Exact languageMatch relevant role terminology without copying duties you did not perform.
- Final fileFollow the requested format and use a stable filename that identifies you and the document.
