Find the semester cash gap

Start with the current school bill, not the published cost of attendance. Subtract grants and scholarships that the portal shows as accepted and pending. Add only loans you have decided to borrow, not the maximum offered.

Then list costs the school will not collect: travel, course materials, medication, laundry, phone service, local transportation and food outside the meal plan. The result is the amount your household must cover before and during the semester.

Sort the money by timing

A semester total becomes usable when each cost has a due date.

  • Before arrivalDeposit balance, travel, essential room items, health appointments and required technology.
  • At the startBooks after syllabi arrive, course access codes, transit pass, first groceries and campus-card funds.
  • Every monthPhone, rent or utilities, medication, transportation and any subscriptions intentionally kept.
  • IrregularClub fees, lab materials, formal clothing, break travel and an emergency trip home.

Turn the remainder into a weekly number

Use a sequence that protects fixed obligations before discretionary spending.

  1. Reserve fixed costsMove money for bills and known travel out of the spendable balance.
  2. Create a small bufferKeep an amount for medication, replacement ID, urgent transport or another plausible surprise.
  3. Count active weeksUse the weeks you will actually be on campus, including exam weeks but excluding breaks already budgeted separately.
  4. Set the weekly transferDivide the remaining flexible money and move only that amount into the account or category used for daily spending.

Bank-account questions to answer

A campus-endorsed account is an option, not an obligation.

  • What triggers a fee?Check monthly maintenance, minimum balance, overdraft, out-of-network ATM and replacement-card fees.
  • How will aid refunds arrive?Confirm the school’s choices and independently verify the routing and account numbers used for direct deposit.
  • Who can see or move the money?Decide whether the account is individual or joint and set alerts that match that ownership.
