Start with deadlines, not a shopping list
The final month feels like one long task, but the consequences are not equal. A missing health form can create a registration hold; a forgotten lamp can be bought later. Put every school message, portal task and appointment into one dated list before you decide what to pack.2
Use the school’s own portal as the authority. Social posts and family checklists can remind you what to look for, but they cannot confirm your arrival slot, account balance or document status.2
The four-week order
Give each week one job so the important work is visible.
- Four weeks outClear portal holds, accept or decline aid, confirm housing, schedule health appointments and request accommodations.12
- Three weeks outReview the real bill, set a semester cash plan, contact a roommate and confirm travel identification.
- Two weeks outComplete course and orientation tasks, test student-account access and buy only items that depend on known room details.
- Final weekRecheck arrival instructions, download essential documents, pack the first-night bag and protect sleep.
Keep one proof folder
Save a digital copy and an offline copy of the records most likely to be needed on arrival.
- ArrivalCheck-in confirmation, housing address, parking directions and accepted identification.
- HealthImmunization status, insurance decision, prescription list and care contacts.
- MoneyCurrent bill, aid status, payment receipt and refund account confirmation.
- AcademicSchedule, placement results, accommodation approval and orientation completion.
Leave room for school-specific surprises
Reserve two open blocks in the last week. Colleges often release a room detail, course update or check-in reminder late, and an overfilled calendar turns a small change into a crisis.2
The goal is not to arrive with every future problem solved. It is to arrive with your access working, your obligations clear and enough capacity to handle the first unexpected thing.
